Greatest Source of Stress? Un-negotiated Expectations. How to fix!

I’m going to approach my 2014 Goals differently….

My primary Goal for our firm for 2014 is to continue to expand our platform exponentially. To continue to take our proven methodology and tools to bigger and bigger audiences and to let go of the obstacles that have prevented this in the past.

Of course, the biggest, oldest, toughest obstacle or barrier to growing The Halpin Companies has historically been me, Katharine Halpin. I am very pleased to report that this longstanding obstacle has finally been moved aside.

Every new client that comes to us has engaged our firm because I have asked them one question. After they share their vision and goals, I ask them, “do you want to approach this the easy way or the hard way”?

Invariably, they respond, “of course, the easy way!”

Then we get started.

If I know this and can facilitate, what I call quantum leap results for our clients, why haven’t I been able to utilize this approach and let our firm do things the easy way?

My commitment is to use the easy way in 2014 methodically and consistently, as a team! For me, the team approach is an absolute requirement. It is the only way for me to be successful.

We are going to achieve our goals the easy way by utilizing the same methodology and tools our clients learn from us…

1. We will focus as much on the process we use to drive results as we we will on the desired results.

By this I mean I will take the time, in advance, to share my vision and specific goals with the team and spend as much time as is required for them to own this vision and our plan as their own. We will then employ a variety of interim checkpoints to assess and revise our plans regularly. We will do this step for every project, new initiative and endeavor.

2, I will get the right people in the right roles, based on each individual’s strengths.

3. When we miss an opportunity or a deadline, I will take time to articulate what was missing. I will do this first for myself and then with the team.

Were we missing a collective commitment? Or, was one of us missing an individual commitment?

Were we lacking the skills?

Were we simply lacking the structure such as a detailed plan of action and some interim checkpoints?

When I am consistent in maintaining this strategic mindset The Halpin Companies enjoys exponential growth and success. More importantly, this success comes to us strategically and without a lot of effort. We rarely experience much stress when we follow these critical steps.

As we enter our 19th year, don’t you think it’s time I walk my talk consistently?

Execution is Not Easy! If it was, everyone would be doing it…even the US Air Force

How can really bright people screw up to the tune of $1 billion?

Our colleagues in the US Air Force were successful in just that.

They selected a software vendor in 2006 to “configure, deploy and conduct training and change management activities” related to a $628 million contract for an off-the-shelf enterprise-wide software system.  Randall Stross, a Silicon Valley author and professor at San Jose State University, captures the details in Sunday’s New York Times.  He quotes an Air Force executive,  laying the groundwork for this debacle by 2010, “We’ve never tried to change all the processes, tools and languages of all 250,000 people in our business at once, and that’s essentially what we are about to do.”

Mr. Stross attributes the failure to endless meetings, complex bureaucratic requirements and the constant need to fight wars.  My assessment of the situation is much simpler.

My experience working with leadership teams for over 30 years tells me that the team’s Vision and planning process was flawed.

This is what happens when the collective attitudes and beliefs are not addressed as part of the vision process.  This is what happens when the vision cannot be articulated or is not embraced by every member of the team.  These are the obstacles to almost every planning process.  When the planning process is flawed, no amount of expertise in execution can bring an initiative to a productive close.

We All Have Issues, The Question is….Can We Laugh About Our Issues?

For some decades now, I’ve been saying to clients, colleagues and friends, ‘We all have issues….the question is…are we working on our issues?”

About 6 months ago I had a shift and I realized the opportunity for growth for all of us, individually and as teams, is not to continue to beat ourselves up, working on our issues. The real opportunity for growth is to be able to share our vulnerabilities freely and with lightness and humor.

We all have vulnerabilities. If you’re breathing, you have them. We over-utilize our strengths and get the volume turned up too high. We move too fast and can’t think strategically. We clam up and withhold when we need to find our voice and share our needs, preferences and objectives. We confuse activity with results.

As Brene Brown, PhD shares in her TED Talk, vulnerability is the birthplace of Joy, Creativity, Belonging and Love. In a business setting, think of your team’s need for greater alignment, clarity, innovation and connections. Being able to laugh about our vulnerabilities and issues is the key to creating an environment where others bring their best selves and thrive. Record results will follow.

Hilton Worldwide’s President & CEO of Simple Philosophy

If you know me, you know I love the NY Times’ Corner Office in the Sunday Business section. Since my definition of R&D is to ‘rob and duplicate’, I always love to steal the best ideas from successful leaders.  This weekly column by Adam Bryant is always full of great ideas.

On Sunday, October 14, the CEO of Hilton Worldwide, Christoper J. Nassetta, shared some real gems.  He articulated the appropriate role of a CEO succinctly and eloquently.  He said he has one simple philosophy…keep steady hands on the wheel.  I so love this.

Think about your organization for a moment.  Are you driving results with such velocity that your colleagues feel intimidated or overwhelmed?
